For years, the opioid epidemic has been devastating communities such as those within Dearborn County and Wayne County, MI and ACCESS (Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services) knew that something had to be done. This is why ACCESS is building a holistic substance use disorder treatment center that will provide wrap-around services for anyone seeking care wherever they are in their recovery journey. In order to spread awareness about substance use disorder (SUD), the construction of the ACCESS Recovery Center and how and where to donate to aid the construction, my colleague Jacob and I created a marketing campaign called Building Hope for Recovery. This multifaceted campaign spanned digital and physical spaces and called for a variety of assets such as social graphics and large and small scale printed assets. 	Goals and ObjectivesTo spread awareness of SUD and the construction of The ACCESS Recovery Center through a wide variety of marketing assets for both print and digital spaces. 

Research Before starting this project, I took time to learn and understand how substance use disorder affects individuals and their loved ones through research and stories told by individuals whose lives were affected by SUD. I also looked at statistics and stories across the country to learn more about the opioid epidemic as a whole. This background knowledge informed the marketing and branding strategy behind the Building Hope for Recovery in many ways.
	Audience People within the Dearborn community and beyond who are interested in supporting the construction of a state-of-the-art center for substance use disorder treatment.

What I learned Not only did this project give me the opportunity to further hone my branding, print and digital design skills but it also helped me learn valuable lessons that have been immensely helpful in other projects since. One of the most important things I learned was to be adaptable and switch strategies when needed.

Caregiving for elderly loved ones is often a thankless mentally and physically exhausting job. These individuals give so much for the ones they care for but often do not get the support they need. This is why the Social Services Department at ACCESS (Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services) started a caregiver support program called the EXHALE Program. This program was designed to empower caregivers of elderly loved ones by providing caregivers with the resources, support, and connection they need. With the support of my colleague Jacob, I developed branding specially for the audience of this support group. I created a brand for the support group that reflects the warm and compassionate nature of the program. By centering the branding around crafts such as sewing and embroidery, my hope was to create a brand that mirrors the feeling of connection between friends in the support group with the connection which is often felt when doing crafts with or for others within the home. Using this branding, I developed a variety of marketing assets such as social media graphics, posters, banners and flyers to get the word out about this amazing program.

	Goals and ObjectivesTo promote a new support group for caregivers
 of elderly adults.

Research  Together with my colleague, I looked into the details of the support group such as what services the group provides, what topics may be discussed and who will likely attend the group
	Audience Caregivers of elderly adults in search of support.


What I learned  This project has helped me elevate my branding design skills. This project also gave me the opportunity to develop my targeted branding skills for an audience I do not typically design for.

Petroleum-based plastics are one of the leading products causing damage to the environment. At every stage of the material’s lifespan, plastic generates a wide array of negative impacts on the environment. It is clear that we need a more environmentally friendly alternative. 
That’s where agar-based bioplastics come in. While other bioplastics may appear to be more sustainable, their production and degradation is often still quite environmentally harmful. Agar-based bioplastics, on the other hand, do not have any negative effects on the environment at any stage in their lifespan and can actually be beneficial. In addition, the production of these materials is quite simple compared to the intensive process of creating actual plastics and can even be made at home. For this reason, it should not be difficult for companies to produce agar- based in the future as the technology surrounding this type of bioplastic advances.My goal with this project was to design a four part interactive exhibit about consumers’ and manufacturers’ current and future material relationships with plastics. The first part of the exhibit showcases the devastating effects petroleum based plastics have on the environment. Then, the installation explains the benefits of using biodegradable bioplastics as an alternative. The exhibit also showcases that this alternative is a practical solution to the current plastics problem by showing that biodegradable bioplastics can one day be implemented on a commercial scale. In order to prove this to the audience, this part of the exhibit features an interactive step-by-step guide to educate the audience on how agar-based bioplastics can be simply made at home. Finally, the last part of the exhibit displays commercially produced agar-based products.


 
	Goals and Objectives
To bring awareness to the damage that petroleum based plastic is having on the environment.To show that biodegradable agar-based bioplastics are a better alternative to petroleum based plastics.To present ways that biodegradable bioplastics can be utilized.
Research

My research began by doing a deep dive into how petroleum-based plastic is produced, used and broken down as well as how plastic impacts the environment. Next, I researched the production, lifecycle and environmental impact of different biodegradable bioplastics. Once I discovered a few different types of bioplastics that were the most sustainable throughout their lifespans and were easy to make, I began making the different materials. After weeks of experimentation, I found a recipe for a type of agar-based bioplastic that I believed would be the best type of bioplastic to showcase. I began to dissect the steps within the making process to determine the best way to display each step in an interactive way. After the research portion of the project was complete, I filtered through the knowledge I gained in order to put the most important pieces of information into the exhibit’s posters, signs and interactive table display. 
	Audience
This project was not only an excellent opportunity for me to learn and share knowledge about the detrimental effects of petroleum-based plastics and a sustainable alternative but it was a way to share that there is hope within an industry that has damaged the earth for so long. Learning that biodegradable bioplastics are so easy to make that they can be made at home allowed me to give others hope and inspire people who can make real change within this industry.

Futures Foundation is a Michigan non-profit organization dedicated to elevating the developmentally disabled community through representation and education and filling gaps in essential care. Together with an incredible team, I worked on a rebrand that represents the organization's bold, unapologetic and authentic nature. After all of our hard work, the board members decided to implement our identity as the new face of Futures Foundation.
	Goals and Objectives
To create a new brand identity that highlights the 
essence of what the Michigan non-profit organization, 
Futures Foundation, stands&#38;nbsp;
for in a bold way.

ResearchWe started off by researching how people with disabilities have been treated and supported historically before looking at how disabilities are seen today as well as the systems that currently provide support. We then conducted interviews with family members of individuals with developmental disabilities as well as people who work with, receive support from and lead Futures Foundation. From there we created case studies and personas for different types of individuals connected to Futures Foundation. We also performed extensive design research in order to create a brand identity that full captures who Futures Foundation is.

	Audience The families and individuals who receive support 
from Futures Foundation, donors and volunteers.



What I learnedBy connecting with and learning from a community 
I was not very familiar with, I learned how to uplift 
thevoices of individuals and their families within the 
developmentally disabled community. Together 
with an amazing team, we created a powerful, 
unapologetic brand for Futures Foundation.

To create an explainer video that promotes algae-based bioplastics as an alternative to petroleum-based plastic as well as acts as a step-by-step guide to making this type of material at home. 

Research
In order to create this informational motion piece, I thoroughly investigated algae-based bioplastics. This involved looking at why the material is better than petroleum-based plastics, the life cycle of algae-based bioplastics and how it can be made at home.



	
Audience 
Environmentally conscious individuals who want to learn more about biodegradable bioplastics and want try making an algae-based version at home.


What I Learned 
This project not only expanded my knowledge on bioplastics and their vast benefits and uses but incentivized me to increase my skill set within AfterEffects.

The aim of this project was to create a fictional 826 store located in Nashville, Tennessee. 826 is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children improve their reading and writing skills. By combining the fact that Nashville is the City of Music and the focus of 826 being to promote educational growth and creativity, Music-Ma-Bob Shop was born. Centered around inventing, creating and music making, the iconography, color palette and typography capture the bold and bright essence of Nashville within a store that would allow kids to let their creativity shine.&#38;nbsp;
	
Goals and ObjectivesTo create a brand identity for a fictional 826 store that highlights the vibrant spirit of Nashville, Tennessee. 


Research
 Since I was creating a location-themed store, I performed extensive research on what makes Nashville unique, the city’s culture and the community that lives there. In addition to looking at information such as the population’s statistics, famous places and people from Nashville and what the city is known for, I conducted interviews with people who lived there to learn more about what it’s actually like to live there.
	
AudienceThe community in Nashville, individuals that shop at the storefront and children that receive tutoring from the organization.

What I learnedAs one of my first branding exercises, this project was a major learning experience for me. From pairing typography with illustrative collages to designing products for a fictional store, this experience taught me how to create a cohesive full brand system based on a strong concept and direction.

Do you have vines climbing up your wall or a dead cactus in the corner? Some people have a green thumb and others do not. No matter the experience level, this houseplant care guide benefits anyone who has an interest in indoor gardening. The mobile and desktop experiences provide resources and care instructions for plant owners of any experience level within an accessible and approachable user interface.


	Goals and Objectives
To create an accessible mobile and desktop application that provides a comprehensive houseplant care guide to plant owners of all experience levels.

Research
 In order to understand the needs and wants of the audience for this project, I spoke to multiple individuals who all had different levels of experience caring for houseplants. With that information, I created case studies that informed the content of the app. It was also essential to perform user testing with a variety of people to ensure that the application was accessible, intuitive and user friendly.

What I learnedThe research process gave me a lot of valuable experience performing interviews and then synthesizing that information into an application that appeals to a large audience. During the design phase, I learned that user testing and iteration is key to making an accessible, user-friendly app.

The disastrous effects of climate change are impacting cities around the world in a wide variety of ways. One way that climate change is impacting Detroit, MI and Wayne County, is&#38;nbsp; the increased levels of precipitation and therefore flooding within the areas with poor infrastructure. As a result, many citizens have been repeatedly devastated by damage to property and possessions as well as displacement in severe cases. 

In response to this issue, my team and I designed a speculative flood relief program within an approachable and accessible user interface. SĀV would be a free program that citizens could utilize in order to receive a multitude of different services that would help them get the resources and support they need while experiencing home flooding.


	Goals and Objectives
To create a speculative solution for the problem of increased flooding in Detroit, Michigan due to climate change. 

Research
In order to create a speculative solution for this issue, we determined that we first needed to look at the what, where, why and hows of flooding in Wayne County. Next, we wanted to better understand how home flooding affects the community and individuals on a personal level so that we could create a speculative solution that provides holistic support. To do this, we read a wide variety of interviews and reached out to individuals in the area that have been affected with this issue. Then while in the ideation phase, we utilized brainstorming tools such as IDEO Design Thinking activity cards and activities from the Think Wrong book.

	Audience Anyone within the Detroit area who is affected by home flooding.



What I learned This project provided me with a great opportunity to expand my ability to think of and apply a speculative solution that would have a meaningful and important community driven impact. During the ideation portion of this project, I learned new methods of brainstorming and ideation that have expanded the way I ideate and explore ideas during this phase of all my design projects from this project out.

Going to the Grand Canyon is an amazing experience but what if you could walk down through the strata layers? Within this experience you can! Located within a stairwell, The Strata of the Grand Canyon Exhibit allows visitors to learn about the different strata layers of this incredible formation in a unique, fun way and view AR artistic representation of the layers in the real world.


	Goals and Objectives

 To create an interactive experience that allows individuals to learn more about the strata layers of the Grand Canyon in an engaging, fun way.

Research

So that I could provide an educational experience, I did research into each of the ten strata layers of the Grand Canyon. Within this process, I learned about what the geological formations look like so I could create interesting artistic 3D representations of each one.

	Audience
Anyone who is interested in learning more about geology and the Grand Canyon.

What I learned
 As this was my first time creating a project that involved AR, I learned a lot about how the technology worked. I also learned a new program called Vectary in order to create 3D representations of the different strata layers. Learning how to create an engaging experience within a large space was also an interesting challenge.
